Dr. Shields is a certified member of the American Board
of Ophthalmology, an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of
Colorado Health Sciences Center, and a regional lecturer on glaucoma related
issues. He specializes in ExPress Mini Shunts, Trabeculectomies, tube implants,
laser trabeculoplasty

Glaucoma is defined as: “A group of eye diseases characterized by abnormally
high intraocular fluid pressure, damaged optic nerve, and partial to complete loss of peripheral vision.” Some risk
factors associated with the disease are listed below:

Note from Doctor Shields:
Welcome to our office! I am a Colorado native, born in
1950. I am married. I have a married daughter and a son. My undergraduate training was
at Cornell University with a degree in Engineering Physics. Then I switched
to study medicine and received my medical degree from the University of
Colorado Medical Center. I finished a rotating internship at Denver's
Presbyterian Medical Center in 1977. My ophthalmology residency was at the
University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. I was trained as a glaucoma
fellow at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Board certification with the
American Board of Ophthalmology was achieved in 1981. Since then I have been
in private practice with subspecialty care in Glaucoma.
I am pleased to have membership with the American Glaucoma Society (AGS),
American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the Colorado Society of Eye
Physicians and Surgeons (CSEPS). My work also includes being a glaucoma
pharmaceutical research investigator and a regional lecturer on glaucoma.
